JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Transportation will provide assistance to the Director of Transportation to ensure sound and effective management practices. Manages the routing of student transportation district-wide. Assign and schedule bus drivers, monitors, routes and vehicles to ensure safe, efficient and economical transportation services.
QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma; Bachelor’s Degree preferred; Minimum of five (5) years leadership and/or supervisory experience; Prior experience working in a transportation department and with the public; Must possess or attain and maintain a valid Georgia commercial driver’s license with a “P” and “S” endorsement within 90 days of the hire date; Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent communication and organization skills; Ability to plan, assign, direct and evaluate the work of others; Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Ensures that bus drivers and related personnel conform to all federal and state laws, rules and regulations, and all district policies; Supervises and monitors employee performance and administers timely corrective action; conducts regular evaluations and provide coaching for performance improvement; Supervises the preparation and updating of bus schedules and routes for the Dougherty County School System (DCSS) to include special school trips in cooperation with appropriate school administrator(s); Provides driver education programs and coordinates training and development; Develops recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs; Takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on the school buses; Works with Principals and Directors or other departments to resolve student transportation issues; Determines student eligibility for bus transportation based on student’s residence and distance from schools; Makes recommendations and assists Director and district administrators of potential road hazards during inclement weather and taking appropriate actions to ensure safety of all children and staff; Works with the Director to enhance and develop ongoing and collaborative relations with internal and external customers to ensure the safety of all DCSS children, employees, and communities; Conducts meetings with DCSS Administration, Transportation Department staff members, parents and the general public to gather, review and disseminate information as needed; Assists Director in recruiting and hiring qualified candidates to ensure all positions are filled in a timely manner; Assists will all reports required by state and federal authorities; Assists in tracking and preparing the Transportation Department’s annual budget; Participates in continuous and ongoing professional development; Performs other duties as assigned by the Director in order to ensure effective and efficient transportation operations.
