POSITION: Media Specialist

LOCATION: Monroe High School

JOB SUMMARY:

Media Specialists collaborate with teachers and specialists to assess student learning and instructional effectiveness. Media Specialists are responsible for developing a school library media program that addresses 21st-century skills, including life and career development, learning and innovation, and information, media, and technology literacy.

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Georgia Professional Standards certification at the Master’s Level (SRS-5) in Media Specialist; Knowledge of teaching principles, practices, techniques, and approaches; Knowledge of current trends, theories, and technologies pertaining to learning and instruction; Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent communication and organizational skills; Ability to successfully integrate technology in the media center; Ability to perform routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Identifies selects or develops short and long-range goals and objectives for the media program based on student, faculty, and curriculum need; Plans with teachers and instructional leaders for the integration of media/information and services; Develops, schedules, and organizes resources to allow easy access to information and services; Reviews the School Improvement Plan and plans for the acquisition of materials to enhance learning consistent with the needs of students with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds learning styles and special needs; Develops and implements policies and procedures necessary for the efficient and effective operation of the media center; Administers the media center budget based on program goals and objectives; Maintains complete and accurate records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations; Assigns, instructs, and supervises support staff and volunteers; Coordinates the selection and acquisition process for media resources and equipment; Provides for use of current technologies; Facilitates the use, maintenance, repairs, and inventory of all media center materials and equipment; Solicits ongoing feedback from members of the school staff regarding the availability, use, and distribution of the media collection and supporting materials and equipment; Establishes a system of records that will provide an appropriate database for evaluating the use and distribution of the media collection and supporting materials and equipment; Teaches library skills in collaboration with teachers to support classroom instruction; Instructs staff and students in the use of resources, services, and equipment; Provides reference assistance; Uses appropriate techniques and strategies to enhance the application of critical, creative, and evaluative thinking capabilities; Uses appropriate materials, technology, and resources to help meet the learning needs of all students; Applies principles of learning and effective teaching in instructional delivery; Recognizes indicators of student distress or abuse take an appropriate intervention, referral, or reporting actions; Collaborates with teachers to support instructional goals and objectives; Participates in overall school curriculum planning and development; Implements an effective public relations program to promote media resources and programs; Maintains contact with other libraries, education, and information agencies; Establishes, maintains, and promotes a collection of current professional resources for administrators and teachers; Trains faculty in the use of media resources, equipment, and technology; Updates professional skills and knowledge and keeps abreast of recent developments in education, technology, and media; Conducts a staff assessment periodically to determine professional growth needs; Models and maintains high standards of professional conduct; Completes all required reports and maintains all appropriate records; Sets high standards and expectations for self, others, and school; Supports and participates in school improvement initiatives, services, and programs; Contributes to the overall mission of the school by supporting school communities, programs, and services; Conducts a media services program in a manner that ensures student; growth/achievement is continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or student program classification; Provides appropriate educational opportunities for students to meet their unique needs, talents, interests, and abilities; Issues AVL cards to faculty and students; Manages technical equipment located in and associated with the library; Provides technical support to students and staff; Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.

REPORTS TO: Principal

SALARY RANGE: Competitive salary and excellent benefits package in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide.
