License and Certification Qualifications: Valid Georgia driver's license required.

Education Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. College training and/or academic preparation through non-English language preferred.

Experience Qualifications: Experience in human services field, preferably with students and in a bilingual environment. Professional-level experience in another language or in a bilingual environment, work experience dealing with the public in a non-English language, work requiring the use of bilingual abilities, and work experiences dealing with families and children preferred.

Skills Qualifications: Strong interpersonal and communication skills in English and the predominant minority language; word processing skills in English and at least one other language; high level of bilingual ability in English and predominant minority language; and ability to represent Gwinnett County Public Schools in a positive and professional manner.

Primary Responsibilities: Provide family outreach and training activities to the parents of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students to assist them in helping their children improve their academic achievement and in becoming active participants in the education of their children.

1. Outreachto parents of English Learner (EL) students
a. Provide support, outreach and training toparents of English Learner students
b. Assist with school enrollment of limitedEnglish proficient students and orient parents of EL students and theirchildren to school
c. Assist parents of English Learners in completingdocuments and other required forms
d. Provide training to parents of English Learnerson the key components of the GCPS system, including policies regardingAcademic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) instruction and grading, informationon how to interpret standardized test scores, information on attendanceand disciplinary policies, etc., to assist them in becoming more engagedin their children's academic achievement.
e. Organize and/or collaborate with others inthe school and community, events for parents of EL students, includingcomputer classes and ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) classes,to assist these parents in enhancing their skills, English proficiencyand actively participating in the education of their children
f. Provide regular verbal and writtencommunication to parents of English Learners to increase their engagementin the education of their children and encourage participation in familyengagement activities
g. Facilitate faculty and staff use of the GCPSLanguage Bank to ensure quality communication with parents of EL students
h. Assist school in the translation of schooldocuments specifically for parents of EL students regarding the educationof their children
i. Assist parents, especially those ofEL and immigrant students, in accessing resources to meet their needs,in the areas of health, (including audiology and vision services, nutrition,immunization and general health), and educational resources to assist theparents in becoming engaged participants in the educationof their children

2. Engaging parents of EL students in supplementalLanguage Instruction Educational Programs (LIEPs)
a. Engage parents of English learners in supportingthe participation of their students in supplemental LIEPs
b. Provide information on the purpose and organizationof supplemental LIEPs
c. Support school leaders, ESOL teachers, andcontent teachers in planning and organizing meetings and informationalevents to inform parents about supplemental LIEPs
d. Assist parents with overcoming barriers toparticipation in supplemental LIEPs
e. Support parents in engaging their childrenwith supplemental LIEPs outside of the regular school day whenever possible
f. Assist parents in supporting their childrenin successfully completing the academic work associated with supplementalLIEPs
g. Follow up with parents of English Learnersto help them build on the experiences their children have through supplementalLIEPs to prepare for success in the next school year or semester

3. Support the local school with general interpretationand translation services and perform general school duties as assignedin accordance with guidance provided by ELL Programs.

4. Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
